A Boston University Presidential Scholar with an amazing grade point average of 3.96, Emily has been named to the Dean’s List each and every semester of enrollment, with three semesters of perfect 4.0 semester averages (including all of her freshman year!). She is a member of the Questrom Honors Program, and I had the pleasure of accompanying in May 2014 to the Czech Republic and Hungary as part of the Honors Sophomore International Field Seminar. I was delighted, though of course not at all surprised, by the degree of openness, drive to learn, and maturity that Emily demonstrated throughout the entirety of the trip.I also greatly admire the many responsibilities and involvements that Emily is so effectively balancing. Not only is she a member of the elite Boston University Golf Team, but she has twice been selected as the Patriot League Female Golfer of the Month, in September 2013 and September 2014, she was also named the Individual Champion of the 2014 Dartmouth Invitational, and most impressively was the Patriot League Womens Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2014. For these contributions Emily has won several awards both from Boston University and from outside organizations, but it would be a mistake to assume that Emily’s strengths are primarily related to her athletic achievement. As I mentioned, Emily’s academic record is stellar which is quite an accomplishment given the demands on her schedule as an athlete. She is concentrating in Finance and also earning a minor in Journalism. She has contributed to the Questrom and BU community in a myriad of ways, including by serving on both the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Provost’s Undergraduate Student Advisory Board, responsibilities for which she was hand-selected by myself and Ken Freeman, the Dean of the Questrom School of Business, reflective of the great esteem in which she is held here at the School.Emily has also obtained professional experiences. She engaged in the Individual Entrepreneurial Project in the BU New Venture Entrepreneurship Competition, where she and her team was selected as a semi-finalist for a golf app that gamifies practice and gives tutorials on how to execute short-game shots. She served as social media intern for ProQuip Golf USA managing their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts in order to build brand awareness, and writing blog posts on trending golf topics and other matters. In 2014, Emily worked for UBS Wealth Management Americas as an intern, working directly with a financial advisor on wealth planning and investment proposals, constructing client portfolio reports, and updating asset holdings to support clients’ investment goals. She worked this past summer at a c oveted internship with the PGA TOUR, a great fit for her, and she has frequently shared how interesting and beneficial the experience was for her.Emily has developed great experience and knowledge, but perhaps even more important is how this is reflective of her ethic. Even if your GPA and GMAT/GRE scores are spectacular, your work experience still needs to impress the admissions readers. Post-college employment reveals that you have â€Å"grown-up† experience in taking direction, meeting deadlines, and working in teams. These are all highly relevant in a program where group projects are the norm. Developing a baseline track record in your field also gives you industry knowledge and the ability to contribute your insights to class discussions. Finally, recruiters prefer MBAs with work experience. When thinking about your work experience, ask yourself the following questions: 1. How much is enough? Too much? Most applicants for two-year, full-time MBA programs have from 3-8 years of experience. (If you have been working longer than that, you should probably consider an EMBA or other program geared for the more experienced professional.) Unless a program actively courts younger applicants, such as Chicago Booth’s Early Career Candidate options or NYU Sterns Berkley Scholars, two years of work experience is usually the effective minimum you will need to prove that you can contribute to and benefit from the program. Stanford also appears to be more open to younger applicants. Its class profile shows an average of four years of work experience at matriculation, which is somewhat below most other programs that typically are closer to five years of work experience at matriculation. 2. Can you show impact? It isn’t only the quantity of work experience that is significant – it’s the ability to show how much you have contributed and what impact you have had. If you have the focus, determination, stick-to-it-ness, collegiality, initiative, and maturity that MBA programs prize, chances are you will have found an opportunity to have an impact on the job by applying those skills and traits. And this is true no matter what sort of role you performed, or whether you worked for a large company or fledgling startup. For example, if you worked for a large company, such as Infosys, Google, Goldman Sachs, or Bloomberg Financial, the adcoms will understand that you were a small fish in a large pond. They will appreciate that you had to work harder to stand out, but they will also look for signs of your talent. Advancement in large companies is often highly structured, bureaucratic, and possibly slow, with less room to dazzle supervisors with distinctive skills and abilities. The schools are familiar with the typical path, and if your talents were recognized in such a large organization and you were given a project normally given to someone above your pay grade, or if you were fast-tracked for a promotion, this will add stature to your application. Additionally, the fact that a large company with a valued brand name hired you in the first place is another indication that you probably have at least some of what your MBA program is looking for. On the other hand, if you joined a startup or launched an entrepreneurial venture, you will have the opportunity to show how you survived and perhaps even thrived in those risky, exciting, uncharted waters. In a small company, you would have had more occasions to display your adaptability and versatility. You may also have handled more responsibility with less supervision. Most applicants who joined startups or launched entrepreneurial ventures have learned invaluable lessons on a faster track than if they had worked in established firms, and wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything, even if their entrepreneurial ventures were short-lived. Not only did they have to toggle among many disparate kinds of tasks, ranging from sales to public relations to product design, but they also learned – sometimes the hard way – fundamental rules of business planning and formation. If you write about being an entrepreneur, however, you will have to demonstrate that this was not a euphemism for â€Å"unemployed.† Your business may or may not have succeeded, but showing how you planned and executed it will speak volumes about you. It will show how you strategized, how you determined the need in the market for your product or service, and the logical sequence you applied in launching and managing your enterprise. Bottom Line The kind of work experience you have, as well as your career progression, will help the adcoms get to know you better. My Tuesdays With Morrie Essay Kelly Kleinhesselink Professor Kramer Basic Writing 20 November 2000 My Tuesdays With Morrie Essay Mitch Albom, author of Tuesdays with Morrie, is flipping through his TV stations one night and he heard these words come from his TV set, Who is Morrie Schwartz? And Mitch went numb. Mitch found out through the TV show Nightline that his life long friend and teacher is dying and Mitch knows that he has to go and see him. Mitch goes to see his old college professor and what starts out as a one-day meeting turns into a four-month class. The class is conducted in Morries house in the suburb or Boston, there are no books or any other students, just Mitch and Morrie. Throughout this class Morrie teaches Mitch the lessons of life; lessons such as death, fear, aging, greed, marriage, family, society, forgiveness, and a meaningful life. As Morries conditions worsen, Mitchs condition is getting better, Mitch is becoming a better person with the help of Morrie. Finally Morries life comes to an end, and Mitch graduates from Life 101. I felt the seeds of death inside his shriveling frame, and as I laid him in his chair, adjusting his head on the pillow, I had the coldest realization that our time was running out. (Pg. 59) That is what Mitch, a journal writer for the Detroit Free Press, said as he lifted his old college teacher from his wheelchair to his recliner. His old college teacher is Morrie Schwartz, a man that is dying from ALS otherwise known as Lou Gehrig disease. As the book goes on, Morrie reaches out to people who want to talk and he teaches them about the real lessons of life, while he is lying on his deathbed. Tuesdays With Morrie is an excellent book because Morrie teaches Mitch lessons about marriage, greed, and family that young adults can learn from. Love each other or perish. This quote sums up all of Morries views and beliefs on the topic of marriage and love. This statement says a lot and I feel that young adults can learn a very big lesson from this short quote. Love and marriage are very important because we all need someone to love and to love back, if we dont we are going to live a very lonely and unhappy life. There is a set of rules that Morrie stated in this book that I feel young adults could learn a lot from. Morrie said that your going to have a lot of trouble if you dont respect the other person, if you dont now how to compromise, if you cant talk openly about what goes on between you, and if you dont have a common set of values in life. And the biggest one of those values is your belief in the importance of your marriage. I think that everything that Morrie says in that passage is very true. When he talks about if you dont know how to compromise then you are going to have a lot of trouble. This is very true, if you cant work and give up some things to make things succeed with the person that you love then you are going to have a lot of problems. I really feel that young adults can learn a lot from that passage as well as throughout the book about marriage. Another issue that Morrie talks to Mitch about that I feel young adults can learn from is greed, and how we as people put our values in the wrong things. I also feel that this is true in todays society. We do put our values in the wrong things, we put our values in money, cars, cloths, and many others, but we all know that that is the wrong place to put our heart. Im sure that we have all heard the quote, When we die, you cant take it with you. Since this has been mentioned so much I dont need to go in depth about it, but I really feel that this is true, we need to realize that we cant take our material things with us when we die.
